Women’s Basketball Begins PCAC Play

Women’s Basketball Begins PCAC Play

CHULA VISTA --- This year, with a mixture of new players, pivotal additions, and an associate head coach - Southwestern women's basketball has a different look in their second season with Tyrone Shelley at the helm.

The early results are encouraging, but the Jaguars remain focused on growing over the course of a season rather than game-to-game results. Re-establishing Jaguar basketball amongst the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference's upper echelon begins with what happens in the next two months. Will a decent start turn into a season-long standard?

The Jaguars return to the court after a 21-day layoff and completed non-conference action having already equaled their previous season win total. Across-the-board consistency, cohesiveness, and sustained basketball development is an emphasis for Southwestern as they prepare for the upcoming twelve conference match ups.

Shooting guard Ari Mason is one of the main driving forces on the resurgent Jaguars. Mason's efficiency in point production and ability to light up the scoreboard makes her dangerous. After dropping 31 points on Cerritos and following that offensive performance with 24, 26, 26 in successive games, she can score in bunches.

Angelica McBride is averaging 18.6 points, 8 rebounds per game and has a strong presence on both ends of the floor. McBride has played in seven games and scored in double digits in all, including a 31 point performance against College of the Desert.

COMMITMENT TO SERVICE AND SPORTS
Aliyah Perry (Orlando, FL), Alina Martinez (Aurora, IL), and Ashleigh Perriatt (New Orleans, LA) average a combined 21 ppg, but are not only college student-athletes – they are all active duty US Navy personnel in Chula Vista with military jobs and obligations. This is a life that is anything but ordinary. From a demanding blend of work, academics, and athletics that begins with a predawn wake-up to a full day's work on base to basketball practice or competition and extended evenings to keep pace with coursework. This isn't your typical work hard, play hard cliche. These women are forged by the sea and embody the values of service, sacrifice, and honor.

Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play gets underway at San Diego City on Friday, January 9. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
