Jags Weekly Basketball Round Up (Feb. 3 – Feb. 7)

The Men's Basketball (16-8, 9-3) team dropped to third place in the PCAC after their loss against MiraCosta (18-7, 11-2), while the Women's Basketball (5-19, 1-9) team pulled off a huge upset victory at Imperial Valley (16-9, 8-3).

The Lady Jags ventured to the desert to face Imperial Valley. The first matchup between the two ended in a blowout loss for the Jags, 40-69.

Kaileih Denley got crafty to start, scoring six of the Jags eight points in the first quarter. The intensity continued to pick up in the second quarter. Ale'a Tufaga, Veelicia Lizama, & Cesca Catibog all joined Denley in scoring, as they continued to inch closer.

27-22, Imperial Valley at half.

Energy from the bench in the third quarter sparked a massive run. Tufaga turned up the heat, playing relentless on both ends of the court. She scored eight points out of the 19 scored in the quarter. 41-38 Jags end of the third.

The team rode the energy into the fourth and closed the game strong.

Final score 56-49 Jaguars.

This win marks the first basketball conference victory for Tyrone Shelley as head coach for the women's team. "The women were just really excited for this game," Coach Shelley said. "They came out cheering their tails off, battling on the court, contributing. It's one of the best wins I've seen so far."

"I had a good even match up," Denley said about her performance. "I could be aggressive, finish through contact. It was the time to really show all I've been doing in practice."

Tufaga said, "To get that win for him meant a lot, but not only for him but ourselves too."
