SWC Athletics to Add Women’s Beach Volleyball

Southwestern College (SWC) is proud to announce women's beach volleyball as its 18th 3C2A varsity sport, with competition set to begin in spring 2027.

"On the heels of launching women's flag football, SWC Athletics is adding another sport for women." Athletic Director Ron Valenzuela said. "This expansion doubles down on the College's strategic commitment to growing intercollegiate athletic opportunities equitably as it continues exploring and providing collegiate pathways for talented athletes emerging from the Sweetwater Union High School District's 32 campuses located in the cities of Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego, including the communities of Bonita, Eastlake, Otay Mesa, San Ysidro and South San Diego."

The Southwestern Community College District recognizes the strong interest and demand for structured college beach competition and is embracing sports that are growing across San Diego County, the So Cal region and state of California. Beach volleyball is offered by over 170 colleges across NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, as well as the NAIA. There are 51 California Community College beach teams, 28 in the Southern California Region and seven (soon to be eight) in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. Southwestern Beach Volleyball will become the seventh community college program in San Diego County.

The new beach volleyball program will complement Southwestern's existing indoor volleyball team led by head coach, Ginny Alexander. "This is a great opportunity for the growing number of Beach Volleyball players in our community. Additionally, the sport's physical rigors will challenge our volleyball players to jump higher and move faster while significantly sharpening their mental volleyball IQ."

The team will train and compete at the Crown Cove Aquatic Center, situated on the bay side across from Silver Strand State Beach (the 2.5-mile oceanfront beach) located between Coronado and Imperial Beach on Highway 75. This collaboration allows Southwestern student-athletes to compete at the collegiate level while staying rooted in the South Bay community.
